چکیده

major (approximately 66–94.5%) cause of sudden death worldwide.1–4 The remaining causes of sudden death are noncardiac conditions, including epilepsy, alcohol abuse, pulmonary embolism, trauma, cerebrovascular accidents and unknown etiology.5 The annual occurrence of sudden death is 350,000–450,000 in the United States, 10.5 per 100,000 population in United Kingdom and 37 per 100,000 in Japan. 6,7 In the United States, there were 341,780 reported cases of out of hospital sudden cardiac death in 1999, which accounted for 47% of all cardiacrelated deaths.7 Identifying the individual at risk for cardiac arrest remains difficult, and approximately 20% of people who suffer from SCA do not have any prior cardiac history. Despite an increase in public awareness and implementation of several programs to rescue individuals from SCA, as well as advances in preventive therapy, the proportion of out-of-hospital SCA has increased 23.5% over the past decade. 8

Sudden cardiac arrest on the field of play: turning tragedy into a survivable event

Sudden cardiac arrest remains the leading cause of death in exercising athletes, and recent studies have shown that it occurs more frequently than historical estimates. While out-of-hospital cardiac arrest often proves fatal, advance preparation can improve outcomes and the chance of survival. First responders to a collapsed athlete on the field of play may include team medical personnel, coach...

Improving survival from sudden cardiac arrest: the role of the automated external defibrillator.

CONTEXT Sudden cardiac death is a major public health problem in the United States, and improving survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest has been the subject of intense study. Early defibrillation has been shown to be critical to improving survival. Use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) has become an important component of emergency medical systems, and recent advances in AED t...

Primary prevention of sudden cardiac death: the time of your life.

The trouble with sudden cardiac death (SCD) is just that—it is sudden and individually unpredictable. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control showed that SCD accounted for 460 000 deaths, or about 63% of deaths due to cardiac disease, in 1999.1 Typically, a cardiac arrest results from sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation that progresses to death if effecti...
